Day 10 – How to Teach Kids the Sunnahs of Eating & Fasting

Sharing is caring!

Ramadan is the perfect time to instill beautiful habits in our children, especially when it comes to eating and fasting according to the Sunnah. Instead of just telling them what to do, we can make it fun, engaging, and meaningful so they naturally embrace these habits for life.

Here’s how you can teach your kids the Sunnahs of eating and fasting in a way they’ll love!

🍽️ Sunnahs of Eating for Kids

Before we teach our children about fasting, let’s first help them develop Sunnah-based eating habits:

Say Bismillah Before Eating – Remind them to start every meal with “Bismillah” to invite barakah into their food.
Eat with the Right Hand – The Prophet ﷺ always ate with his right hand and encouraged us to do the same.
Eat What’s Nearest to You – Instead of grabbing from all over the table, kids can learn to take from their own plate first.
Chew Slowly & Eat Mindfully – Teach them to eat without rushing and to stop when they feel full.
Say Alhamdulillah After Eating – Encourage them to express gratitude by saying “Alhamdulillah” once they finish their meal.
Lick Their Fingers or Clean Their Plate – The Prophet ﷺ taught us that blessings could be in the last bite of food.

🌙 Sunnahs of Fasting for Kids

When kids are old enough to start fasting (or even practice half-day fasts), we can teach them the Sunnahs of fasting:

🌟 Eating Suhoor – The Prophet ﷺ said, “Eat Suhoor, for in Suhoor there is blessing.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
🌟 Breaking Fast with Dates & Water – If dates aren’t available, they can break their fast with water, just as the Prophet ﷺ did.
🌟 Making Duas at Iftar – Teach them the special Iftar dua so they get into the habit of making heartfelt supplications
🌟 Brushing Teeth & Staying Fresh – Teach them that using a miswaak or toothbrush is completely allowed while fasting.
🌟 Practicing Patience & Kindness – Fasting isn’t just about food—it’s also about good manners and avoiding fights or arguments.
🌟 Giving Charity – Encourage them to share their food, give sadaqah, or help set the table for Iftar.

🎉 Fun Ways to Teach Kids These Sunnahs

Here are creative ways to help kids learn and remember these Sunnahs:

🖍️ Print Activity Sheets – Use fun printables like “Sunnahs of Eating” colouring pages, word searches, or matching games to reinforce these habits.
📖 Storytelling – Share short stories of how the Prophet ﷺ ate and fasted in a way kids can relate to.
🍽️ Mealtime Fun – Pretend you’re in the time of the Prophet ﷺ and encourage kids to follow Sunnah eating manners at the table.
🏆 Sunnah Challenge – Give them a checklist to track how many Sunnahs they follow daily. Reward them at the end of Ramadan!

💬 Make It a Family Effort!

The best way for kids to learn Sunnah habits is by seeing their parents do it first. If they see you saying Bismillah, eating mindfully, and making duas at Iftar, they’ll naturally copy you.

🌟 Let’s make this Ramadan special by teaching our little ones the Sunnah in a fun and loving way! 🌟
